WORKSHOP ‘ELECTRON BEAM SERVING BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE – A HIGH RESOLUTION MICROSCOPY’

workshop-28112013

was held on November 28, 2013 for 29 holders of the Polish Children’s Fund Scholarships. There were two lectures given by prof. E. Wyroba on the Nobel-prized discoveries revealing the unity of the living world and molecular background of the inherited disorders as well as construction of the high-tech electron microscopes.

Next the practicals took place (repeated twice) where participants observed in TEM myelin sheaths (with the explanation what happens when they undergo damage), ribosomes, mitochondria and thylakoids. In SEM they saw the surface of cucumber leaves infected with fungi, carrot flower and ant. They also got acquainted with sterile culture handling, chemical fixation of the cell, ultramicrotomy and  ‘critical point’ drying system as the method to obtain the samples for scanning electron microscopy without the loss of volume/surface details.
